Audiovisual production and responsible cinema: a whole sector gets involved

The environmental impact of the film and audiovisual sector is not negligible: its emissions are estimated at 1.7 million tonnes ofCO2 per year, with a huge amount of waste, particularly for feature films (sources: Ecoprod study, 2020; Franceinfo Culture, 2021).

This is what prompted the Ecoprod collective, a federation of industry professionals, to develop the label of the same name, at the end of 2022. This is an opportunity for audiovisual, cinematographic and advertising productions committed to minimizing their ecological impact to make their mark. And ultimately, to interest producers and viewers who are sensitive to this commitment.

How to obtain the ecoprod label

Since September 20, 2023, any work, program or advertisement can apply to AFNOR Certification to have its production examined with a view to obtaining the Ecoprod label. It’s a way of objectifying this sign of recognition and making it more credible!

The auditor will focus on the actions that can be taken to ensure that the “eco-production score” exceeds 65%, and on checking that the eight mandatory criteria have been met, in particular the calculation of the work’s carbon footprint, the appointment of a person in charge of eco-production, and the systematic use of trains rather than planes for journeys of less than 5 hours.

Each action earns points and calculates an eco-production score for a film, series, documentary, streaming program or advertising sport. Since its launch, some fifty productions have already followed the label’s guidelines and signed up.

The Ecoprod label helped us structure the eco-production process for Un si grand soleil , and we’re very proud to be one of the pioneering productions,” says Laurence Schwob, Managing Director of France.tv studio, in an Ecoprod press release. The label is self-refining over time: initial feedback has enabled us to adjust the criteria and adapt the audit process to the reality on the ground.

In May 2024, the publication of the AFNOR Spec 2308 standard on responsible film, audiovisual and advertising production prompted Ecoprod to revise its labeling criteria: audits within production companies will be aligned with AFNOR Spec from September 2024.
