What role can the social economy play in the circular economy? How is the construction industry taking advantage of this economy? What about the recycling sector? Enjeux, the magazine dedicated to standardization and management (AFNOR Editions), brings you a special issue on the circular economy.

In a circular economy, sorting and recycling waste from products and packaging is an essential link. The European Union has announced ambitious recycling targets to facilitate the transition to a circular economy that will create new jobs and sustainable growth.

The French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (Medde) has launched Triman, the first logo to be made compulsory by law, with the aim of making manufacturers and consumers more aware of their responsibilities. In the Midi-Pyrénées region, the circular economy is gaining ground, with initiatives including the Rencontres régionales de l’économie circulaire and a project for a dedicated agri-business zone.

The circular economy also involves building the foundations of a new model: the transition from a linear system to a circular economy model is a new challenge for society. The UN, moreover, is taking an interest in the production and consumption of sustainable goods and services, and is seizing on a report to launch international standards.

The construction and public works sector, which is a major consumer of non-renewable natural resources and has the ability to reuse and recycle materials at the end of their useful life, is particularly concerned by the circular economy.

Reuse, recycling, a new approach to consumption: the circular economy proposes an alternative model of economic development in which the social and solidarity economy (SSE) has a major role to play, with added social and environmental value.

Also in this issue, other topics directly linked to the circular economy: voluntary standardization and biobased products, waste management policy in Europe, Desso’s Cradle to Cradle® strategy for its carpets, Démoclès and its collaborative project for managing building waste, Elipso’s proactive environmental policy….
