Developing voluntary standards for artificial intelligence

Driving a car, wielding a weapon, spraying fertilizer or pesticides in the right doses, medical imaging diagnostics, customer relations chatbots… Artificial intelligence is going to be used in every field.
AI-enabled systems are already part of our daily lives… and this is just the beginning. Already, in 2020, the economic weight of artificial intelligence-based systems was estimated at $20 billion.

A whole industry is developing in this sector with its many applications, making it a key factor in France’s and Europe’s economic sovereignty. In May 2021, as part of the Grand Défi IA, the French government has mandated AFNOR to support economic players in drawing up voluntary standards to foster confidence in systems using AI. Three years earlier, voluntary standardization had been identified as a key tool for this purpose.

 

In December 2023, the first major framework standard was published: ISO/IEC 42001 , giving guidelines for deploying an AI management system. You can have it certified.
