If I apply the ISO 50001 standard, am I exempt from the regulatory energy audit?

Under a 2012 European directive, companies “other than SMEs” are required to carry out an energy audit of their consumption, every four years, with the aim of identifying potential energy savings and initiating action plans. In France, the first deadline was December 5, 2015. The companies concerned therefore need to prepare for the next one, at the end of 2019. The measure provides an exemption for companies holding ISO 50001 certification.

To be exempt from the regulatory audit, your company must not only apply the ISO 50001 standard (old or new version, it doesn’t matter at the moment), but also have a third-party organization such as AFNOR Certification has attested that it has duly implemented the system on at least 80% of its energy bills, with a certificate issued after a visit by an independent auditor. Even if a company decides to apply the standard in all respects, it will still be subject to the regulatory energy audit if it does not obtain this distinctive mark. Note that a company whose ISO 50001 certification has expired is once again subject to the standard.
