AFNOR Éditions publishes “Pratique de l’interaction sol-structure sous séisme”.

This new book explores the theoretical foundations and the most varied situations of interaction between soil, foundations and a superstructure. Stéphane Brûlé and Fahd Cuira provide the keys to understanding and characterizing the effects of seismic loads on structures and their surface and deep foundations.

This new book explores the theoretical foundations and the most varied situations of interaction between soil, foundations and a superstructure. Stéphane Brûlé and Fahd Cuira provide the keys to understanding and characterizing the effects of seismic loads on structures and their surface and deep foundations.

With 2,700 earthquakes a day worldwide, and more than 1,000 earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above since the turn of the century*, the interaction between soil, foundations and superstructure plays a major role in building design and construction. Understanding and anticipating the mechanical interactions between the superstructure and the supporting soil is therefore essential when designing geotechnical structures.

In this book, the authors offer a comprehensive overview with clear explanations and illustrations to identify the issues, quantify the effects and deal with the technical questions. Adopting a resolutely global approach, Stéphane Brûlé and Fahd Cuira blur the artificial boundaries between different specialties: wave propagation, seismology, geology, soil and structural dynamics, strength of materials, geotechnics, etc.

Richly illustrated with concrete examples, the book provides designers and technicians with practical tools applicable to foundation and retaining structure engineering. It also offers a number of “reading keys” for understanding the assumptions made by the technical and regulatory approach, to enable the reader to appropriate all or part of this reference system, which has been constantly expanding and evolving in recent years (technical guides, standards, etc.).

A true reference work for all professionals in the “Art of Building” or curious readers simply wishing to learn more about this captivating subject.

THE AUTHORS

Stéphane Brûlé is a research engineer in geotechnics for special foundations in seismic zones. He is head of the Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne region for Entreprise Ménard, a Vinci-Construction subsidiary of Solétanche-Freyssinet.

Fahd Cuira is a graduate engineer from the École Polytechnique de Paris and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. He is currently Scientific Director of Terrasol (Setec Group), a geotechnical engineering consultancy.
