At the end of April 2018, the government published a roadmap unrolling numerous actions to be taken to develop the circular economy. At the heart of this theme is waste recovery and its various forms: reuse, recycling, composting, incineration with energy recovery. But there can be no good recycling of waste without containers to collect, sort and transport it!

In order to be perfectly efficient, waste containers have to meet various standards, developed by manufacturers and users, who are free to apply them or not. In particular, the NF EN 840 series of voluntary standards, published in 2013 and structured into six parts. These standards are now in the revision phase, and from July 13 to September 5, 2018, the updated version is out for public consultation: you can view and comment on the draft text by creating an account on Norm info, the voluntary standards search engine developed by AFNOR.

NF EN 840: design and dimensional requirements for waste containers

The NF EN 840 series of voluntary standards offers a number of recommendations. Part 1 deals with the design and dimensions of two-wheeled containers with a capacity of up to 400 liters for comb-type container lifts; Part 2 with four-wheeled containers with a capacity of up to 1,300 liters, with flat lids, for trunnion and/or comb-type container lifts; Part 4 with four-wheeled models with a capacity of up to 1,700 liters, with flat lid(s), for wide trunnion or BG-bascule container lifts and/or wide comb-type container lifts. Parts 5 and 6 cover performance requirements and test methods, and health and safety requirements respectively.

Whether or not they were part of the group of experts that worked on these new, Europe-wide texts, waste materials professionals have every interest in consulting the revised version, in order to anticipate the new needs of their market. At the end of this consultation phase, they will be able to attend the meeting at which comments will be counted. “says Paula Castillo, project manager at AFNOR Normalisation, who led the work.
