Take part in a workshop on Low Voltage Direct Current

Keep up to date! AFNOR Normalisation and CENELEC are joining forces to offer you a workshop on June 20 in Brussels, reviewing LVDC technologies and related standardization work.

Through the EISMEA agency, the European Commission funds projects to boost the development and pre-standardization of innovative topics in support of the Single Market Programme.
In this context, AFNOR-CEF, in collaboration with its partners, is piloting a project on the theme of low-voltage direct current.

Low-voltage direct current (LVDC) and direct current (DC) technologies are a mainstay of the modern European electrical landscape. It is based on fundamental principles that distinguish it from alternating current (AC) and make it increasingly important in many applications.

The integration of LVDC into traditional electricity grids presents unique challenges and opportunities for the European Union (EU). While historical distribution infrastructures are mainly designed for AC technologies, the adoption of LVDC requires significant adaptations.

Low-voltage direct current plays a crucial role in a multitude of applications and industrial sectors both within the EU and in a wider international context. As demand for electricity continues to grow exponentially, understanding the fundamentals and requirements of low-voltage direct current is crucial. This will enable us to respond more effectively to our society’s growing energy needs.

The main objective of the EISMEA STANDARDS4LVDC project is to map existing work, in order to obtain a clear overview of the current situation in LVDC standardization; to identify gaps and needs, to discuss the scope of a future CENELEC technical structure on LVDC, as well as to propose a roadmap for the development or revisions of European standardization deliverables, in support of European Union legislation and policies.

To share the interim results of this project, AFNOR-CEF and its partners are organizing a workshop on June 20, 2024 in Brussels.

STANDARDS4LVDC  » workshop program

The workshop will provide a global overview of the state of the art of LVDC technologies by addressing existing international standardization work on LVDC (including the IEC SyC LVDC systems committee).This will be followed by a specific focus on the European perspective, which will address:

  • EU policies and legislative framework on LVDC and related areas;
  • Existing standards and gap analysis of LVDC use cases for the European market following a survey of CENELEC members;
  • European stakeholders’ perspectives on the future of LVDC;
  • An exchange on the scope of a future CENELEC technical structure on LVDC

The workshop will be in English.
